How many times have you received a special gift, one that caught you off guard? Maybe it was unexpected, unearned, or from someone whose life you briefly touched. Maybe someone just wanted to show they were thinking of you.
What if we focused on that kind of holiday gift-giving? To give without expectation, without obligation, without a list - what do you think would happen? So much of the season is wrapped up in the "have-tos" instead of "want-tos." What if we gave from the heart instead of worrying so much about being fair or matching each other dollar for dollar? What if we began looking for those in need - an unemployed neighbor, the classmate who can't afford mittens, a grieving family - and focused our giving in this way? What if we gave without expecting anything in return? What if we learned to receive without feeling the need to reciprocate?

I think we'd quickly discover the true Spirit of Christmas.
"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights..." (James 1:17)
